Another Big Patriotic Event Is Planned For Saturday.

This coming Saturday, according to last evening’s NBC nightly news, there will be a national demonstration in front of the Capitol building to show support for the ‘political prisoners’ who have been arrested for their participation in the January 6th riot. The report focused on the security that will be in place for this event, including a strong, wire fence to keep protestors away from the building, which was not in place back in January, along with a declaration of emergency invoked by the head of the Capitol Police.

Had these steps been taken prior to the January ‘insurrection,’ as the riot was referred to by NBC, there probably wouldn’t have been an invasion of the Capitol or the unfortunate deaths of a protestor and several cops. This time around, the good guys are making sure that the situation will be kept under control, no matter how many bad guys show up.

Except the funny this is that it’s not clear just how many bad guys are going to show up. The NBC News broadcast said there will probably be 600 or so protestors at the event.

Six hundred? Are they serious? From the number of times I have heard the liberal media talk about what will happen in front of the Capitol on Saturday, the number of reporters and other media representatives will probably outnumber the protestors by two or three to one.

If this is what the great insurrectionary assault on America has come down to, all I can say is that I’m not going to stay up at night wondering whether our democratic traditions and institutions are in any way, shape or form being threatened by the putzes who walk around inn their ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ t-shirts. If Congress were to debate a bill making urinating in the street a federal crime, I guarantee you that more than six hundred people protesting this assault on our basic ‘right’ to piss wherever we wanted would show up to stage a demonstration on the Capitol steps.

Last weekend, some of Trump’s most stalwart supporters held a ‘We The People’ rally in Kentucky which was supposed to attract at least 10,000 patriots who would come together to promote the idea that we need to ‘take the country back.’ And in the process of taking the country back, we’ll also dump Biden and put Trump back in the Oval Office where he belongs.

The event was headlined by Mike Lindell, who sells pillows on the internet and has been pushing his products at rallies for Trump over the last couple of years. Another speaker was Lin Wood, a lawyer who a week before the January 6th riot said that Mike Pence would face ‘execution by firing squad’ if he certified Joe Biden’s win.

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out quite the way they were supposed to work out. Maybe 200 people showed up, 300 at the most. The big gathering of all those patriots turned out to be a dismal flop.

Which brings us back to the big rally planned for this coming weekend in D.C. You would think that between the declaration of a ‘state of emergency, the erection of a big fence, the installation of cameras that give the cops a 360-degree view of everything going on, and no doubt enough armed police and national guard troops to stage the Third Battle of Bull Run, that thousands of ‘patriots’ are planning to show up, right?

If what happened in Kentucky last weekend is any guide to what will happen in front of the Capitol on the 18th, I’d be surprised if more than 50 ‘patriots’ show up.

Whether the rally draws a crowd or not, however, either way the events poses something of a Scylla and Charybdis, i.e., lesser of two evils problem for our good buddy Donald Trump.

On the one hand, if he says anything positive about the rally, no matter how many or how few lunkheads actually appear, his comments will remind everyone about how he told the January 6th rioters to go home, except he didn’t say anything to quell the violence until long after the damage was done. And let’s not forget that the investigation of the riot by a House Select Committee has just begun.

On the other hand, if Trump figures out some way to duck the whole deal by spending the weekend playing golf at one of his overpriced resort courses, then he’ll get plenty of blowback from the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and the other groups which are the foundation of his rapidly-dwindling, so-called ‘base.’

When you make a deal with the Devil, there’s no room for backsliding or remaking the deal in another way. Either you’re in or you’re out. Or as Grandpa would say, “potchke en feninten,” (read: kick in the ass.)

Saturday’s going to be a good, no, a great day.
