Do We Know What’s Happening in Sudan?

Ever hear of a country called Sudan? It’s located south of Egypt and is the third-largest country on the African continent with a population of some 50 million, nearly all being Muslims which is why the country is a member of the Arab League.

The country is actually officially known as the Republican of Sudan, but it has never had a republican form of government and is currently embroiled in a civil war between two military factions, a conflict which broke out after the country’s dictatorial leader, Omar al-Bashir, was overthrown by a coup in 2019.

Nobody has anything remotely close to a verified figure, but estimates are that as many as 400,000 Sudanese may have been killed by al-Bashir’s regime before he was chucked out of power and stuck in jail.

That may be a startlingly dramatic figure for mass deaths, but if the current lack of food and emergency supplies caused by the civil war continues much longer, it will be dwarfed by what may be between 750,000 and a million people who will starve to death in the coming months.

This is the estimate of the United Nations, which first began reporting the onset of famine in Sudan back in December but has now produced a revised estimate which could soon be revised upwards again.
