Donald Trump vs. The University. Who Wins?
Yesterday, Yale University joined Harvard in rejecting Trump’s attempt to move the culture war onto college campuses. And if we don’t fuck the whole thing up, which we certainly can do, I believe this attempt to make America believe that universities are the bastions of woke in the United States will prove to be Trump’s Waterloo, whether he knows it or not.
I live a stone’s throw away from the main campus of the University of Massachusetts, and at a meeting of the Faculty Senate this past Thursday, the faculty voted in favor of a ‘Resolution to Establish Mutual Academic Defense Compacts’ which calls on the University Chancellor to “commit meaningful financial, legal, organizational and strategic support” to protect America’s land-grant universities from outside threats against academic freedom.
The 250 educational institutions which come under the land-grant rubric happen to represent more than a million faculty and around 6.6 million undergraduate and graduate students. The Faculty Senate meeting was convened at the Amherst campus after 14 international students were informed that their visas had been revoked.
