Has Trump Declared War on Democracy?
Maybe I just missed it, but in all the talk about Ukraine, I have yet to see one prediction of how the country would have been governed if the Russian invasion had resulted in the disappearance of the current Ukrainian government and some kind of Russian puppet regime being installed.
The first free elections in Ukraine took place in 1990 and the country’s Communist party was swept into the political dustbin the following year. The country today has more than 300 registered political parties, of whom more than 50 nominated candidates for the Parliamentary elections held in 2014.
What would the Russians have done once they got rid of Ukrainian democracy? Would they have put a soldier on every corner? Would they have appointed a group of supplicating stooges to sit in the Rada Chamber and pretend to pass laws? How would the courts have been run? Maybe there wouldn’t have been any courts.
I ask all these questions because I continue to see discussions and article in our media of how Trump continues to be a ‘threat’ to democracy with the maintenance of our democratic system still up for grabs if Trump runs for President again in 2024.
