How Come Trump Can Still Win?
My favorite author, I have read all his books three or four times, is John LeCarré. And the reason I like LeCarré so much is that he truly understands and describes the gap between “the world of the imagination and the world of the real.”
That quote is from the final chapter of The Secret Pilgrim, and if I were to walk around with one single sentence which would remind me of what the current political situation is all about, in particular how to explain the continued popularity and strength of Donald Trump, I would ascribe to him LeCarré’s unerringly brilliant phrase which sums it all up.
Because ask yourself the following question: How is it that someone who has been indicted and convicted of multiple felonies, has also been found guilty of defamation and sexual misbehavior in a civil case, and is facing additional criminal charges in both federal and state courts manages not only to continue campaigning for the most powerful elective office in the land, but also continues to register equal numbers or even some slight leads in various pre-election polls?
I can’t count the number of public officials who resign from an elected post every year after they are charged and convicted of one silly violation of some silly law or maybe their hand was spotted a little too deep in the cookie jar. There are United States Senators like Larry Craig who…
