How Come Trump Has Become So Nice?
So, I’m watching Trump’s news conference yesterday and all of a sudden I realized that every time he mentioned Kamala by name, he pronounced her first name perfectly and said it in a slow and measured way almost as if he wanted to make sure that the report of his conference that she would receive from members of her staff who watched the event would include a comment about how he said her name.
This is a guy who stood up at a public rally last week and not only mis-pronounced her name in several different ways — Koomala, Kaymala — but laughed and said he was going to mis-pronounce her name as often as he could.
His script at this rally also included a long and fairly bitter diatribe about how the Vice President had always been Indian and now all of a sudden had become black, an attack line which echoed through the alt-right echo chamber all week long.
Yesterday, there wasn’t the slightest mention of this issue in the press conference at all. And either the media people had been told not to raise the question of race or maybe they just decided to leave well enough alone, but either way, all of a sudden Kamala was being mentioned not only by her first name as she pronounces it, but there was no mention of what has been Trump’s signature rhetorical device, namely, coupling the name of an opponent with an insulting nickname such as…
