How Come Trump Isn’t Worried About Going to Jail?

The last time someone ran for President from a jail cell was in 1920, when Eugene Debs was the national candidate for the Socialist Party of America and got 3.4% of the popular vote. He was in stir for a ten-year stretch because he had been convicted of violating the 1918 Sedition Act, but President Harding commuted his sentence in 1921.

If you think that Trump-o doesn’t see Debs as a model for the current campaign, then you don’t really understand what Trump is about at all.

Trump ran a rather standard Presidential campaign in 2016, mixing together the usual GOP bromides about the Affordable Care Act and other Democrat(ic) giveaways to the minorities and the poor, together with personal attacks on Hillary who never really explained what that email server was doing in her home.

In the 2020 campaign, on the other hand, Trump focused his narrative on how and why voting-by-mail or drop-off ballots were a fraud, promising to command an ‘army’ of 50,000 troops which would patrol election locations to make sure that everything was on the up and up.
