Is the American Diet Killing Us?

As promised, here’s today’s rant on the processed food industry, which RFK, Jr. is blaming for what he claims is a national population which is becoming increasingly unhealthy because of the way we eat.

In order to eat, you hv to be able to either produce your own food or buy food that has been produced by someone else, right?

When I was a kid, my neighborhood and just about every other neighborhood in the city where I lived (Washington, D.C.) had a store where my mother could walk to and buy fresh meat or fish, another store where she could buy fresh vegetables and fruits, and a third store where she could buy bread.

My mother did the shopping because she didn’t work outside the home. That was my father’s job. Her job was to clean the house, make sure the kids did their homework when they came home after school, and prepare dinner which was always ready when Dad came home from work.

This was the typical division of labor in 85% of all American households in 1955, the other 15% of the population living on farms where many of these families produced at least some of the food which they consumed every day.

By the miod-1950’s, most of the food that most Americans consumed was already processed, meaning that it had been treated in some way or another to make it possible for people living…
