Is Trump a ‘Threat’ to Democracy?
Okay, so Trump isn’t a Fascist. But isn’t he still a ‘threat’ to democracy? This question was thrown at me last night by one of my readers and I’ll answer it now.
Not only isn’t Trump a threat to democracy, but as far as I’m concerned, he is not only committed to the democratic process and democratic form of government, but if anything, he is responsible for a much greater degree of democratic political activity than any previous individual who ever ran for public office within the American political system.
Now that might sound crazy to you, but hold off hitting the Delete key for a few more sentences, okay? Because I said what I just said notwithstanding the fact that I am a confirmed and intransigent Trump hater, and my hatred of him goes back to 1989 when he ran full-page newspaper ads demanding the death penalty for the kids who allegedly assaulted a woman jogging through Central Park even though the cops arrested the wrong kids.
My point is that someone can’t be considered a supporter of the democratic form of government just because they promote the idea that government and the rule of law can be used to establish and maintain nice, liberal practices and ideals. Conversely, someone isn’t automatically against democracy because they want government to fashion a more conservative social order based on a more conservative views of…
