Is Trump Really Getting Out the Vote?

A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday I was driving on the commercial street that runs alongside the Air Force base near my home. The base is surrounded by a bunch of condo developments which look like barracks but are actually group housing whose residents are for the most part retired military folks who always try to live near a PX so that they can buy their cigarettes and beer at the G.I. price.

I came to an intersection and there were a dozen or so older men and women, obviously retired military, who were waving flags and banners for Trump. As I drove by, I gave them the finger and they waved back.

These folks were engaged in what the GOP calls a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) event, And it was the largest such event I have ever seen run by the GOP in the 64 years that I have been interested in politics, an interest which started when I went to the big 1960 Kennedy rally held in New York’s Herald Square.

I don’t know if you’re aware of the fact that the Republicans are, at best ambivalent about the whole process involved in getting people to vote.

Ever hear of a GOP group doing a voter registration event? Ever see a bus rented by the GOP on Election Day bringing people to the polls?

Republicans don’t feel particularly comfortable with elections because it means that certain people…
