John Gotti and Donald Trump: Fighting for the Same Thing.
For all the talk about whether Trump is a Fascist, the real issue is whether the people who still turn out for his rallies or put MAGA signs on their front yard lawns are also enamored of Fascist ideas. Because if that’s the case, then we have what could become a really serious problem down the road.
But a clever Netflix movie I watched about famous gang bosses had a segment on John Gotti which made me think about how and why Trump attracted such a following in 2016 and why he still has a committed band of loyal supporters today.
I was a New Yorker during the years when John Gotti was known as the ‘Teflon Don’ because the government couldn’t seem to make a case against him that would stick.
After he was declared innocent of racketeering charges in 1989, a finding that was helped by a $60,000 payment made to one of the jurors, Gotti returned to Queens for an all-night block party featuring fireworks and free eats.
The party got all kinds of local media coverage including an interview with two guys from the nabes who both shouted gleefully that “it don’t matter how many guy’s he’s killed, Gotti fought the government and he won!”
And there you have the explanation for why Trump continues to be popular even though he’s been charged with endless…
