Should Canada Be the 51st State?
Apropos of Trump starting a border war with Canada by imposing a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, here’s a story from 2005.
That summer, the wife and I decided to fly out to Alaska for a vacation. We flew from Hartford to Detroit where we were going to board a flight to Anchorage except the plane never arrived.
So, instead of a week in Alaska we decided to rent a car and drive across the Great Plains.
The second day out we came into Plentywood, MT which happens to be the location where the WPA built a nature preserve during the 1930’s which is the only nesting-place in the entire world for the white pelican.
We spent a remarkable hour in the preserve, got back in our rented car and decided to drive 15 miles or so northward, cross the border into Canada and drive back east on Canada’s route 18.
We get to the border and are stopped by a U.S. border guard wearing a bullet-proof vest and holding an assault rifle who tells us to pull over because he and his team are going to search our car before we leave the United States.
So, we sit down in some musty, dirty room which doesn’t have a toilet and an hour later, I go outside where two of these schmucks are still digging around in the trunk of the car and ask them why they think that two senior citizens, one a senior…
