Some Suggestions About How to Reduce Gun Violence from Nick Kristof.

The terrible rampage at the Robb Elementary School unleashed the usual ‘thoughts and prayers’ from Gun-nut Nation versus the just as usual calls for more gun laws from the gun-control side.

I must admit, however, that the single, best response came from Ted Cruz, who believes that we can do a better job of protecting kids in school by having only one door into the building that would be locked at all times. And this schmuck went to Harvard?

Anyway, we did get some rational and informed ideas about what to do from our good friend Nick Kristof, who believes we can reduce the annual toll of gun violence by some 15,000 lives if we enact what he refers to as ‘reforms,’ consisting of more comprehensive licensing, more effective safe storage requirements, mandating age limits for certain types of guns, etc., etc., and etc.

To back up Kristof’s suggestion that we have stricter licensing procedures, he notes that Massachusetts has a licensing requirement and has one of the “lowest gun-mortality rates in America.”

Except there’s only one little problem with what sounds like an obvious connection between licensing of guns and gun-fatality rates. The Massachusetts law which requires that every gun transfer be recorded and occur only between two licensed…
