The Alt-Right Attacks Racial and Gender Diversity. So What?

If the re-election of Donald Trump signals that the United States is moving into a period of conservative backlash, the announcement yesterday by Wal Mart that it is ending diversity training for its staff has to be the nonplus ultra proof that we are returning to a 1950’s type of Eisenhower feel-good culture again.

Wal Mart refers to this training as lessons in ‘racial equity’ which the store staffs are required to take. As probably the only Medium and Substack writer who has actually worked in a Wal Mart store, I actually took those lessons in racial equity. Or perhaps I should amend that statement to say lesson because that’s what it was.

I worked for Wal Mart for several weeks a few years ago because I happened to be walking out of a Wal Mart store near where I live, and I saw a sign in the store’s entrance that they were looking to hire additional staff.

What the hell. Why not find out what it’s like to work for the country’s largest private employer with 1.6 million employees in the United States and another half-million overseas?

So, I walked into the Personnel Department, was given a form to fill out with the usual personal information and was told to come back the next day with a proof of citizenship or whatever Wal Mart needed to see in order to give me a…
