A few years ago, I happened to be listening to Rush and he began taking off in the angriest and most insulting way at Meryl Street, who had made some nasty comments in the media about him and his political views. After ranting and sputtering for a couple of minutes about how Meryl was just another Hollywood ‘phony,’ he ended his diatribe by saying that he didn’t really care what she said because, after all, he was at the height of his popularity, and she was a ‘has been’ whose career had now ‘flopped.’
I found it somewhat funny that Limbaugh would compare his career to the career of perhaps the single, most popular female movie actor in the entire world, And his statement about how she her career had gone downhill was almost comical given that she had just released ‘The Post’ in which she played Kay Graham, one of her best roles.
I was reminded of this moment when I happened today to read a rant that Donald Trump put out about Robert DeNiro on his Truth Social page. It’s such a perfect combination of vitriol, anger, and stupid narcissism that I’m going to quote it in full: “Robert De Niro, whose acting talents have greatly diminished, with his reputation now shot, must even use a teleprompter for his foul and disgusting language, so disrespectful to our Country. He has become unwatchable both in movies, and with the FOOLS that destroyed the Academy Awards, bringing them from one of the top shows in the Country to a Low Rated afterthought. De Niro should focus on his life, which is a mess, rather than the lives of others. He has become a total loser, as the World watches, waits, and laughs!”
DeNiro’s acting skills have diminished so much that his work in The Irishman is remarkable, to say the least. And what he said about Trump at a meeting to present the Gotham Awards was not different from what he has been saying about Trump many times over the past eight years.
But what was most interesting about Trump’s invective was that DeNiro’s remarks were made to the audience at the event but didn’t go any further because the Gotham Awards show was hardly big or even small news. If Trump had ignored DeNiro and just posted something about his primary campaign, the whole episode would have been forgotten before it began.
