Trump’s Losing Both the Campaign and His Mind.
Not that I necessarily believe negative media notices will determine the outcome of a political campaign, but if there’s any connection between how a candidate is described by the media and how well that same candidate does at the polls, Donald Trump couldn’t have had a worse couple of days.
First of all, there was that crazy visit to the Arlington Cemetery, where he posed in front of the graves of the servicemembers killed during the pullout at Kabul, which not only was a violation of cemetery regulations, but also resulted in a physical shoving-match between a cemetery staffer and a member of Trumpo’s campaign staff.
Then to make matters worse, Trump’s campaign manager tried to explain the whole thing away by stating that the cemetery staffer, who’s on active military duty and is a woman to boot, was some kind of psychological nut who was having a nervous breakdown, a statement which the Army refuted by issuing a formal statement praising the trooper’s service record and noting the prohibition against using the cemetery for political purposes again.
The last time someone tried to take on the United States Army for political purposes was in 1950, when Senator Joseph McCarthy went after the Army for fostering a Communist conspiracy at a New Jersey military base. Remember what happened to McCarthy after an attorney…
