So, here we are, a week and a day from the finish line, and things look as undecided as they looked a month ago, if not more.

On September 19, Kamala had a .01% lead in the aggregate total for the 7 battleground states. She also had a 1.7% lead in the aggregate national polls (all the data in this story comes from RCP.)

As of last night, Trump had a 0.2% lead in the aggregate total for the battleground states, and a 0.1% lead in the national aggregate polls.

With the exception of Georgia, where Trump has a 2.3% lead, the gap between the two campaigns in every other battleground state is less than 1 percent.

Since the pollsters usually give themselves a 3% error margin both ways, the election right now is effectively tied, both in terms of the overall vote, as well as the totals from the battleground states.

For all the talk about how the Electoral College gives the GOP a head start, in fact, it’s the Democrats who always go into the national campaign with a sizable Electoral College lead, because most of the most populous states happen to be colored blue. In order to win the whole shebang, you need 270 electoral votes, and the Democrats can always count on 191 EV’s, against 131 EV’s for the GOP.

Know all those Western and Mountain states that always vote red? Those states…
