Want to Clean Up the Mess at Columbia University?

My daughter graduated from Columbia University in 1997 and her college experience seems to have stood her in good stead. But if she were a senior in high school and thinking about where to go to college next year, I wouldn’t be happy to see her going to the campus on Morningside Heights.

Oh, to be sure she would get a good education and make some connections that would help her advance in a professional career. But I would feel concerned about her physical safety which right now wouldn’t be assured.

And my worries about her safety and security wouldn’t have anything to do with the so-called ‘pro-Palestinian’ demonstrations that the NYPD broke up.

I would be worried about whether she might get hurt because of the totally inept behavior of the University President, Nemat Shafik who, as far as I’m concerned, should be fired immediately and told to get up and get out of town.

Why do I say that? Because of an incident which occurred during NYPD’s so-called ‘clearing away’ of the demonstration, when one of the cops accidentally shot off his gun while he was allegedly checking to see if an office in one of the administration buildings was being used by a couple of the kids as a secret hideout overnight.
