What Does Another Trump Term Mean?
Yesterday I had the pleasure of tuning into a Zoom meeting where Jamie Raskin was giving his views on the election results. The group which Raskin was addressing is a set of Democrat(ic) activists, many of whom live in Raskn’s Congressional District, which covers fancy-schmancy Bethesda adjacent to fancy-schmancy Northwest D.C.
When Raskin was asked what he was going to do to respond to Trump’s victory he said, “My most important task is to defend the Constitution.”
That was quite an answer. What the fuck was Raskin talking about?
I always thought the Courts defended the Constitution and that the role of the legislature was to enact laws which would improve life for the common good of all.
On the other hand, since I’m not a Constitutional expert like Raskin, nor have I ever taught Constitutional law which Raskin taught at American University’s Law School, who am I to question his definition of what his job is supposed to be all about.
But with all due respect to Raskin’s academic and legislative experience, all I know is that the kvetching going on in liberal circles about Trump’s victory last week sounds awfully similar to the complaints and moans I heard after 2016, which was the last time Trump won an election and we were forced to defend the Constitution at any and all costs.
Defend against what? The passage of a tax cut which had been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk waiting for a Republican to get into the Oval Office…
