What Does MAGA Really Mean?

The pic above is an Evangelical church located in a neighborhood known as the North End of Springfield, MA. Obviously, this is a Hispanic neighborhood with most of the homes divided into multiple-family dwellings, usually several apartments occupying the same space that originally was the residence of a single family.

In fact, this church was a Jewish Orthodox synagogue built in 1923 when this neighborhood was almost entirely Jewish because Orthodox Jews had to live within walking distance of their shul.

There is absolutely not a single physical remnant in this entire neighborhood today which hints at how completely and dramatically this neighborhood has changed over the past hundred years. The changes actually began to occur in the late 1950’s, when the Jewish residents of Springfield moved out to the adjacent suburb of Longmeadow and the Hispanics began to move in.

The new residents of this neighborhood wear brown-skinned and spoke a weird combination of English and Spanish which was called ‘Spanglish.’ The former residents were white-skinned and spoke English in public but perhaps spoke a little Yiddish when they were home.

When Donald Trump gets up at a rally and yells about taking America ‘back’ to the way it used to be, what Springfield’s North End used to look like is what he’s talking about. And Trump comes by…
