What Is Kamala’s ‘Opportunity Economy’ All About?

So, the other day I was eating my lunch in front of the TV (where else?) and I tuned into CNN (what else?) and caught Kamala giving a speech to the Economic Club in Detroit where she was laying out her plan to grow the economy over the next four years and maybe over the next eight.

Now before I get into her remarks (and my reaction to her remarks) let me just provide my readers with a bit of historical perspective to go along with today’s spiel.

This whole issue of what the government should or shouldn’t do to boost the national economy only became part of the political narrative when FDR came into the White House in 1933 and was facing what in some parts of the country was not just a catastrophe, but even a worse state of affairs.

There were communities in what had been the Farm Belt and then had become the Dust Belt where people were actually facing not just poverty, but famine, something which we associate with some of those ‘shithole,’ Third-World countries, but would never imagine happening here.

[Incidentally, I can only hope that Trump’s phrase — ‘shithole countries’ — makes it into the political lexicon as his contribution for how we describe the rest of the world today.]

We also didn’t know how many banks had failed because banking was still an industry regulated by individual states who didn’t furnish their data to any centralized place.
