I went to college at the University of Cincinnati and my roommate in the dorm was a kid from Johnstown, PA who had a four-year athletic scholarship on the football team. My roomie’s name was Bob and he had been a high school all-American as an offensive lineman and received more than 50 offers from colleges all over the United States.

When Bob reported for his freshman year, he attended the football team’s summer camp which was held on the campus of a branch of the Ohio State University system at Bowling Green. On the very first day of practice, all the new team members had to do 40-yard wind sprints and Bob finished dead last.

Bob never suited up for a varsity game at Cincinnati, but he actually completed four years, majored in business administration, and received his degree. He once told me that because he was the first person in the entire history of his family to go to college, he would also be the first member of his family who wouldn’t get laid off on a regular basis from the steel mills at Johnstown where every other member of his family had always worked.

What this brief anecdote about my college roommate illustrates is the fact that even if you’re the best of the best at a certain level, if or when you step up to the next higher level, you may find yourself in over your head.
