Why Can’t Trump Just Be Polite?
Back in the 1970’s, I lived in South Carolina, and every other week played poker with a group of friends. One of the members of our poker club was an older gentleman named Dave Baker, who was a retired contractor and never missed a game.
It turned out that Baker had plenty of dough because he had built every post office in the state between 1949 and 1952. He got the contract because he had been a delegate to the 1948 Democratic Party national convention, and although most of the members of the South Carolina delegation walked out and then formed the ‘Dixiecrat’ third party which nominated Strom Thurmond, Baker kept several of the South Carolina delegates at the Democratic convention and they all delivered Truman their nominating votes.
After Truman was inaugurated in 1949, a bill went through Congress which authorized the construction of new post offices in several states including South Carolina and the contract was given to Dave Baker, who then built or rebuilt a post office in every South Carolina town.
I can only hope that Joe Biden figures out a similar way to reward the Democrat(ic) leadership in the four or five ‘battleground’ states whose electoral votes will keep Joe behind the real Resolute desk for another four years.
In fact, I don’t really care if we carry the popular vote in Michigan, Wisconsin…
