Why Do People Like Donald Trump?
I just watched an eight-minute discussion on MS-NBC about an Atlantic Monthly article by a long-time pundit named Peter Wehner who explains what he calls ‘motivated ignorance,’ which means that the more Trump is confronted by facts with which he disagrees, the more he aggressive, nasty and profane he becomes.
His aggressiveness is exactly what his audience wants to see and hear, because these are people who are suspicious of most politicians since they know for a fact that politicians are crooks. And everyone also knows that taxes are too goddamn high, and we don’t need to hear ‘toca numero dos’ when we call the electricity company to report an outage and we get that fucking electronic menu instead of a real, human voice.
I don’t actually think Trump really knows or cares about the so-called alt-right shift within the GOP. When he decided to run against Hillary in 2015, he knew two things: 1) Hillary had higher negatives than any Democrat(ic) Presidential candidate in at least the previous thirty years, and 2) the trailer-park population, mostly white, mostly uneducated and mostly poor, didn’t usually come out to vote for anyone because they were basically ignored.
So, you can’t win GOP primaries against middle-of-the-road guys like Jeb Bush by going to the Left; what you need to do is swing hard right and tell these forgotten voters…
