Why Do We Vote the Way We Vote?

When I was in the 5th grade, we had elections for class officers. I was nominated to be class President, but I lost. The kid who won was a friend of mine, so I didn’t really care that he was more popular than me.

Now hold that thought.

Several times every week I stop off for breakfast at a Mickey D’s near me. I sit across from a group of oldsters who have a breakfast club every morning where they meet, drink their half-priced coffee and review the important news, which is who’s in the hospital, who got out of the hospital and either went home or went to the morgue, and how much the guy is now charging them to cut their grass.

During the political campaign of course, there were daily discussions about which candidate — Trump or Harris — would get their votes and why. I live in an area which usually votes overwhelmingly for the blue team, but last year the choices of these seniors seemed to be split about half and half.

Why were some of the breakfast club members voting for Kamala? Because they ‘liked’ her, they thought he was ‘cute.’ Why didn’t these people want to vote for Trump? Because he was an ‘asshole’ or some other sobriquet like that.

What were the Trump voters saying about their man? They would say he’s a tough guy. Or they would expand on that judgement and say, “He don’t take…
