Why Shouldn’t We Secede?

Yesterday, Mike Bloomberg announced that his foundation will cover the costs of what the United States has been paying to implement the climate accords, a payment which runs around $7 million a year.

For Bloomberg, that’s chickenfeed. But if he wants to put up some serious money to reverse some of the stupid ideas embodied in those Executive Orders issued by Trump, here’s a better idea.

I think it’s about time that residents of blue states like the state in which I live — Massachusetts — begin to take seriously the idea of seceding from the United States, a political response to the Trump-Musk Administration which, believe it or not, happens not to be contrary to any federal law.

I began thinking about this initiative after my Governor, Maura Healey, issued the following statement about Trump’s ‘final solution’ for dealing with immigrants: “every tool in the tool box has got to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and protect our states and to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle.”

Notice how Governor Healey didnn’t distinguish between ‘citizens’ and ‘residents.’ That’s the way it should be. And if the Trump-Musk Administration wants to define our population in some ither way, let them do it in states which support their sick point of view.
